Is Salvation Limited to Certain Religions

The concept of Religion has been misrepresented and used for individual, group or sectarian gains. We have thus been encouraged to regard these human endeavours as the essence of religion. Thus, we talk about separate Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Hindu religions etc. However, religion is an intrinsic search by the human spirit for his origin in God. As such religion should be the unifying culture of all human spirits.

In other words, God is our religion and the various peculiar paths through which we seek Him are the various sects, churches and affiliations which we today regard as religions.

The messengers of God sent for our help and support over the millennia – the prophets, the forerunners and the direct envoys of God – all brought step-ladder guidance, each adapted to the maturity of the people at the particular time. This step ladder guidance directs us towards the recognition of the Will of God in His Creation. If we objectively examine the unadulterated teachings of these guides, whether that of Krishna, Buddha, Lao-Tze, Zoroaster, Moses or Mohammed we will find that they all point to the One Supreme God. There is a recognition from the last two guides that this supreme God is the one that revealed himself to Abraham.

The point is that for the human spirit, there is only one religion; the search and recognition of the Truth about God. Without this Truth no one can be saved. The path to this only Truth however can pass through the various revelations of God, worldly interpretations of which have been called religions. These paths however can only remain true to the extent to which these revelations have remained pure and unadulterated. Thus, the path to God, to salvation also leads through the various sects with a clarity that depends on how faithful these are to the original teachings.

However, as will be noted in my list of the prominent messengers of God to humanity, I did not mention the names of the direct envoys of God. This is because these are direct embodiments of the radiation of God in Creation and cannot be regarded in the same way as prophets, or forerunners. Being from God and a part out of God the Son of God Jesus is an envoy of God representing the embodiment of Truth. Thus, in His person, Christ is the Truth, the way and the life. He is the Truth, the other prophets are pointing to, without which salvation is impossible. He is the shepherd to which the sheep, the lambs of God belong and He is also the gate through which the sheep may enter.

However, it is Christ as the Son of God incarnate who is this Truth, not any Church formed around His teachings. If an individual faithfully follows the guidance of the prophets and forerunners, they must inevitably find the Truth that is Christ.

Christ told us, as reported in the gospel according to John 14:6 that He is “the Way and the Truth and the Life, and that no one comes to the Father except through Him”. Over time we distorted this simple teaching to mean that it is an acknowledgment of His physical self, which is the way to God.

This misconception led to the belief that only those who acknowledge that Christ walked on earth, suffered and died on the cross to wash them clean of sins can be saved. And that all other human spirits, who were not privileged to hear about this historical fact are thereby lost for ever, even if they are striving to live in the Will of the Father. This position ignores the Justice and Perfection of the Father.

It is the inner essence of Christ that is the Light, not His flesh, which is only a cloak for the Light. Salvation as already stated lies only in the Word, the Truth and not in a physical person, even when this physical body cloaks Divine Unsubstantiality1 as was the case with Christ. We must recognise that it is not by calling Him ‘Master’ or claiming connection with His physical person that we are saved but by doing the Will of God. By imbibing (eating and drinking) and living the Truth, His essence.

Thus, any human being, who out of personal striving or pure inner longing directs his gaze to God for help, makes contact with the Light that Christ brought and embodies. They will thereby have received Christ and will be granted the strength to resurrect out of dead Matter. They will receive the enablement to find the way back home to the Eternal Kingdom of God.

Yes, Christ is the only Way, the only Light, the only Life and no one can come to the Father except through Him, but the path to Christ does not lie only in the many ‘Christian’ churches that do not even agree with each other. Certainly not through the path of the distorted teachings of these churches. Indeed, we must recognise that the Word, the Truth Christ brought into Creation is anchored in the whole Creation unto all eternity and that the path to this Truth does not go through any specific church. Otherwise, why should Christians have a different church to that Christ Himself attended while on earth? The only thing in Creation that can make contact with the Truth is the purity of our intuitive striving, irrespective of our doctrinal leaning.

This discussion is not meant to condemn the churches but to alert us to the limitations of human endeavour and the need to become spiritual at last. To alert us to the fact that in these end times any teaching that focuses your attention on material needs and comforts does not serve your welfare and, in many cases, represents the false prophets of the end time that Christ warned about.

Today the responsibility for every individual’s salvation has been transferred to each individual human spirit, to our innermost being. No church or sect can serve as an excuse for failure since today, as promised by the prophets of old, the knowledge of the Lord covers the earth as the waters cover the sea (see Isaiah 11:9; Hab 2:14).

In this sense it is important to remember that Christ pointed us to the coming of another Envoy like himself from God, who like himself will embody the Truth and who will give us all the Truth that Christ himself was not able to give us with his coming. That Christ could not give us all the Truth is not a failure on His part but is in part due to limitations in the understanding of the human spirits at that time and in part to the fact that His earth life and work was truncated after only about three years. In many parts of his teachings Christ admonished us, especially those that love him and wish to obey him, to remain alert for this last Envoy from the Father whom he variously described as the Spirit of Truth2, the Holy Spirit, the Comforter2, the Son of Man3and the Bridegroom4. He admonished that we must listen to Him.

In John 16:1-15, the Son of God gave the clearest exposition about this last Envoy from God; last because He will also bring the Judgment and bind Lucifer5. It is a tragedy, indeed a symbol of the deep penetration of the anti-Christ into the Churches, that this clear injunction was misrepresented as the outpouring of power by the Holy Spirit that occurred on Pentecost day or interpreted to mean a second coming of Christ to “His Church” (by which they imply the Christian Church). But the church of Christ is the body of all those spiritual beings who follow the Will of his Father. He did not personally form any other physical Church, and while he was on Earth he participated actively in the Jewish Synagogues. His sheep, His Church will be all who live in the Truth, who live in the Will of his Father, who have believed in him as the Son of God. These are not limited by sectarian boundaries and it is to these that He extended the promise of the Spirit of Truth.

Thus, salvation is for all who come to a recognition and who live in accordance with the Truth Christ brought and represented, a Truth which is not limited to any church. Belief alone is however not enough, as “even the demons believe”6. Action is demanded of all who wish for salvation. You must live in the Will of His Father.

As Christ promised, and Divine promises are always fulfilled, salvation at the end of the ages, depends on a recognition and acceptance of the last Envoy from God, the Spirit of Truth. Again, this is unrelated to any sect or church. He will not be bringing any new religion!
