I am the Way, the Truth and the Life

A little over 2000 years ago, a momentous World changing event occurred. The Light from beyond and above Creation, the Light that is God, out of which All Life flows, took on flesh to dwell amongst us. The Light and Power that embraces and sustains everything, the meaning and essence of our being as human spirits and for all that exists, came to earth. This Light and Life, sent as supporting Radiation from the Eternal Source of All that is from God was anchored in Creation, specifically on our planet earth in a physical cloak, as Jesus Christ.

Christ, the Light from God, the Source of all Life had freely accepted to receive a covering of Material substance and dwell in the flesh with us. At the end of December every year, we celebrate His Advent, which has become a Festival of the Love of God.

But why did He come? The answer is simple but our comprehension of it has been very poor and very limited. Christ came to save us from the Darkness that by our actions and choices, we have allowed to arise; a darkness that had become so dense as to suffocate our longing for the Light and blight our striving towards God. He came to bring salvation from the darkness that firmly closed the way to God and to our Eternal home in the Paradise of human spirits.

No human spirit could still find the way or even connect to the support that was always available from the Light. Without His coming and without our recognition of the Truth He brought and represented we would have remained Eternally separated from God. We were at imminent risk of being lost and counted among the dead when at the end the owner of Creation sends His Envoy, the Son of Man, for judgement.

Already, at that time 2000 years ago, this judgement was imminent and the sending of the Light and the Way to humanity was an emergency act of Love to halt the decay, point the way back to the Light and to Life once more to the erring human spirits. He was to bring us Salvation. This was why the angel said His name amongst men was to be Jesus and not Imanuel.

The Mission of Christ

The mission of Christ was a dire one, full of danger from the capricious human spirits He wished to save and from the darkness that held them in thrall. It could be foreseen and was prophesied that given the standing of the human spirits at the time, they were unlikely to receive him warmly and with gratitude. It was prophesied that even while faintly perceiving that He was from God and One with God, humanity was still more likely to reject and murder him as they had done to previous messengers from God. To take on this mission, this burden upon Himself for the sake of the few that still had a longing for the Light, was thus the greatest imaginable sacrifice.

The prophecy that it was because of the consequences of our sin that He had to come and to die on the cross was given through Isaiah: ‘Surely, he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we consider him punished by God, stricken by him and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed’[i]. Unfortunately, this has been misunderstood, and many still consider Him punished, stricken and afflicted by God, which is why they claim that it is the Will of God for Him to suffer and die on the cross. They misinterpret the last part of this prophecy to mean that His afflictions were meant to heal us and bring us peace, however we only need to recognise that the phrase ‘for our sins (transgressions, iniquities)’ actually means ‘because of our sins’ and we can reach the right understanding.

Christ came to bring us salvation in the Word! For salvation lies only in the Word of God. Being a part from God, Christ is the embodiment of the Word, the word that is God, from which everything came into existence. And the Word was made flesh. His very essence is the Word, not His physical flesh and so to live, to come alive, we must imbibe his essence, not His physical flesh and blood that are but coverings.

His mere stepping foot on earth anchored the Light in the darkness, dispelling and overcoming the darkness. Living as a man amongst men, He slowly, with great labour and suffering, sowed the Word in human spirits, in the few that were still open to receive It. A great Light was thus lit in the human spirit and additionally He gave them the enabling strength and power from the Holy Spirit to spread the Word with their lives and activity.

These few human spirits, this kernel of disciples and followers initially were to be found only among the Jews, a people prepared over thousands of years to be a support for other human spirits. This is indeed why they were a called people and why they were given the name, Isra-el, meaning “warriors for God”.

Meanwhile the rest of the world at the time of this World changing event were wallowing in spiritual indolence and ignorance, in intellectual egotism that blinded them to this fateful happening. The leadership of Israel was already saturated with indolence and pride. Over them, as over the rest of the then known world was an evil empire, the Roman empire, one of the darkest empires the world had seen up to that time.

While the Light’s events were happening in the little regarded town of Bethlehem, in a manger, outside the shelter or support of any man or power, the rest of the World lived out their usual meaningless activities: meaningless for their spiritual goals because all their thoughts and activities were directed towards Matter, towards material goals. Envy, hatred, manipulations for power, wealth, achievements, empires and civilisation occupied most of humanity, all directed away from the spiritual upbuilding we were sent to earth to achieve.

Out there in the night skies of Bethlehem, heaven approached and engaged the earth. The dense ethereal darkness that surrounded our earth was cleaved asunder. Unbelievable Light from the Highest Spiritual planes, a harbinger of peace and goodwill, illuminated and dispelled the darkness. A witness and herald of the Divine King, who has stooped down to gather his children as the hen gathers its chicks, if they will only listen to Him. A host of divine and high spiritual beings, angels and archangels, all rejoiced to be in the train of the King. The night skies resounded in jubilant songs. But on earth only a few took notice.

Ethereal events can only be visible to those who are still spiritually alert, and behold only a few shepherds, out there in the cold, faithfully guarding their sheep, could see. Yet the event was for all human spirits. The wise men from distant lands were also permitted to see. They discerned the approaching star, even before it reached the earth and journeyed to Judea to arrive just at the right time.

Today, because of the grace of the Living Word, we too can begin to see. Yet the majority of us who claim to follow the Light and Life that is Christ show in our activities and attitudes that we do not in fact understand who Christ is and still lack the correct perception of the purpose of His Mission. For the majority, who talk about Christ as the Son of God, there is no conscious experiencing of what the Word means. They complacently believe that He came for the primary purpose of dying on the cross in order, with the blood shed on the cross, to wash away all the sins of humanity.

The consequence is that instead of striving with our utmost strength to live in the Will of His Father, we assume that it is enough to believe in His name, that if only we believe and label ourselves as Christians, the blood will automatically wash away our sins. In fact, we assume that we are only saved by the grace of His sacrificial death and not by our activities, our volition and our works that are meant to swing in the Will of the Father.

This hypocritical piety that beats the chest and luxuriates in a feeling of being especially connected, loved and protected by God, is no different from the attitude of the Pharisees and Sadducees who Christ condemned, but is even worse. The Pharisees only stood on the grounds of the imperfect teachings of Moses and the Prophets, which they had also distorted. The present generation of Christianity stands on the perfect Word brought in person by the Son of God, the Living Word, Jesus, and yet choose to also distort His clear Word.

The Pharisees and Sadducees with their following of Jews and Romans crucified the Word from God on a cross and heaped atrocities upon His person. Today, many leaders of churches with their following in distorting the truth crucify Christ daily and hourly in the Word and blaspheme His name. They mislead human spirits who are searching for Truth, directing them away from the Light and enveloping them in a cocoon woven in deceit and darkness. The deceit is enshrined in the teaching that all followers need do is believe and claim the Lord as their personal saviour. But ultimately everything will be balanced out, to the minutest detail for the leaders and the led and everyone will be judged according to His activities – thoughts, words and deeds. On how these swing in the Will of the Father.  We must each reap the fruit of our volition which we sow in Creation, and this reaches far beyond these earthly planes.

This wholesale distortion of the word of Christ binds many human spirits to the darkness. I have mentioned in passing the consequences of attaching salvation to the physical blood of Christ, shed on the cross, when He, while on earth clearly indicated that the Spirit alone gives Life and that the flesh counts for nothing[ii]. Let us also look at another distortion that focuses on the physical flesh and blood.

I am the way and the Truth and the Life

Christ told us, as reported in the gospel according to John 14:6 that He is “the Way and the Truth and the Life, and that no one comes to the Father except through Him”. Over time we distorted this simple teaching to mean that it is an acknowledgment of His physical self, which is the way to God.

This misconception led to the belief that only those who acknowledge that Christ walked on earth, suffered and died on the cross to wash them clean of sins can be saved. And that all other human spirits, who were not privileged to hear about this historical fact are thereby lost for ever, even if they are striving to live in the Will of the Father. And yet, all devout Christians must believe in the Justice and Perfection of the Father.

It is essential not to forget that it is the inner essence of Christ that is the Light, not His flesh, which is only a cloak for the Light. Salvation as already stated lies only in the Word, the Truth and not in a physical person, even when this physical body cloaks Divine Unsubstantiality[iii] as is the case with Christ. We must recognise that it is not by calling Him ‘Master’ or claiming connection with His physical person that we are saved but by doing the Will of God i.e. by living in accordance with the Truth that Christ brought and represented.

Thus, any human being, who out of personal striving or pure inner longing directs his gaze to God for help, makes contact with the Light that Christ brought and embodies. They will thereby have received Christ and will be granted the strength to resurrect out of dead Matter. They will receive the enablement to find the way back home to the Eternal Kingdom of God.

Yes, Christ is the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life and no one can come to the Father except through Him, but the path to Christ does not lie only in the many ‘Christian’ churches that do not even agree with each other. Certainly not through the path of the distorted teachings of these churches. Indeed, we must recognise that the Word, the Truth Christ brought into Creation is anchored in the whole Creation unto all eternity and that the path to this Truth is not limited to any specific church or religion. The only thing in Creation that can make contact with this Truth is the purity of our inner spiritual striving, our intuitive movement directed in purity to serving God, irrespective of our doctrinal leaning.

This discussion is not meant to condemn any specific religion but to alert us to the limitations of human endeavour and the need to become spiritual at last. It is meant to alert us to the fact that in these end times any teaching that focuses your attention on material needs and comforts does not serve your welfare and, in many cases, represents the false prophets of the end time that Christ warned about.

Today the responsibility for every individual’s salvation has been transferred to each individual human spirit, to our innermost being. No church or sect can serve as an excuse for failure since today, as promised by the prophets of old, the knowledge of the Lord covers the earth as the waters cover the sea[iv].

The Message of the Kingdom, which Christ promised in Mathew 24 will be given to the whole world before the end, has been given to the whole world! The human spirits must now judge themselves based on how they relate to the Truth that has again been anchored for the last time. As the Son of God, Jesus, once warned, only the Truth can now set you free![v]

All human spirits who are privileged to receive the incomprehensible gift of Love from the Omniscience of God, must recognise the responsibility we bear with this gift of the Word.  We must leave the Holy Word untainted to speak to all seeking human spirits. Let us take the time to reflect and re-order our lives such as to place spiritual goals first. Let us open our inner being to the world changing events of the present era, to the grace of God granted as a last help to all human spirits who truly seek with a good volition and a pure intuition.

The question for each of us to resolve urgently is ‘What have you made of the gift of the Father in Christ? What is your understanding of His Word that He left as a sacred legacy to us? Are you waiting with an alert spirit and a vibrant volition for the bridegroom, the Son of Man that Christ promised will come before the end?

Obedience to the Word will make it possible to receive the blessing that is reserved only for the faithful; the blessing of being permitted to recognise Christ as the embodiment of the Love of God, which in turn opens us to connect and to receive the Truth from the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth.

[iii] Divine Unsubstantiality indicates the Almighty God since He alone has no form in which we can recognise Him. All else that exists has forms that originate in the Radiation of God, including Divine beings, Spiritual beings and other substantiate beings.
